Vaughan explained why he believes Brook is a better choice than Pope for the captaincy.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Harry Brook carries the aura of a future leader on the pitch and should be the natural successor to Ben Stokes as Test captain. Brook, known for his bold style, brought England back into contention during the fifth Test by smashing a fearless 111 off just 98 deliveries. His innings left England needing only 35 runs with four wickets in hand going into the final day. However, the hosts failed to reach the target and lost the match by 6 runs.
Vaughan, who captained England in 51 Tests, praised vice-captain Ollie Pope. However, he feels Brook is best suited to take over the reins once Stokes steps down.
“To me, Harry Brook really stands out as a leader. He has that natural leadership quality,” Vaughan said on the Test Match Special podcast.
“If Ben Stokes gets injured in the future, why couldn’t Ollie Pope remain as vice-captain while Harry Brook takes on the captaincy?Brook, appointed as England’s white-ball captain earlier this year, guided the team to a win in his debut series against a struggling West Indies side,” Vaughan added.

“I also think highly of Ollie Pope, who would be an excellent vice-captain. He’s a great person to support the captain and offer ideas. However, being a vice-captain doesn’t always guarantee success as a captain.” Vaughan mentioned.
“Marcus Trescothick was an outstanding vice-captain for me, but I wouldn’t have considered making him the captain, Ollie Pope, at 27, is now leading England in a Test match for the fifth time, having previously stepped in when Stokes was sidelined with a hamstring injury last year,” Vaughan continued
“I don’t have enough insight into the dressing room to make a judgement, but what I want is the best leader for the England team. A strong vice-captain doesn’t always translate to being a good captain,” he concluded.
