Smith, who was unable to handle Siraj’s outswingers, was caught behind.
Brad Hogg pointed out how Jamie Smith, the England wicketkeeper-batter, was uncomfortable while facing Mohammed Siraj‘s deliveries on Day 5 of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy fifth Test. India secured a dramatic six-run win at The Oval, London, levelling the five-match series 2-2.
With England needing 35 runs to win, Smith was expected to play a crucial knock. India, on the other hand, needed four wickets. Siraj provided India with a strong start by removing Smith in the second over of the day.
Smith, who was unable to handle Siraj’s outswingers, was caught behind. In a recent video on his YouTube channel (at 1:08), Hogg discussed Smith’s anxious time at the crease.
“He had a chance to make his mark in international cricket, but he froze like a deer in headlights in front of Siraj,” he said.
Smith scored two runs off 20 balls as England were bowled out for 367. Siraj starred with a five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 30.1-6-104-5. Hogg also criticised India’s fielding placement for Atkinson on the last ball of the 85th over, suggesting they could have let him hit a boundary to bring the injured Woakes on strike.
“One moment stood out, which was Krishna’s final ball to Atkinson. England needed eight to win, Woakes was injured, and I thought, ‘Why have all the fielders on the fence?’ If Atkinson hits a boundary, Siraj would be bowling to a batter with just one hand on the bat.”
India’s decision paid off, as Siraj delivered a yorker to dismiss Atkinson on the first ball of the 86th over.
