He mentioned that it was Gambhir who wanted the transition, and his willingness to offer young players a chance made a difference.
Former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu commended Gautam Gambhir, the team’s head coach, after their impressive win over England in the Oval Test. This victory allowed India to level the recently concluded five-match series 2-2.
Despite featuring a young squad with a new captain, the Indian team showcased their potential and fought back to equalise the series against England. Sidhu pointed out that while some critics may be waiting for a loss to blame Gambhir, he questioned whether those same voices would acknowledge his efforts after the outcome.
“We tend to engage in a lot of hero-worship. I want to point out that whenever India performs poorly, everyone wants to blame Gautam Gambhir. So, will you stand up and applaud him today?” he asked on his YouTube channel.
He mentioned that it was Gambhir who wanted the transition, and his willingness to offer young players a chance made a difference. Sidhu argued that the head coach deserves credit for his work, particularly after facing considerable criticism.
“It was Gautam Gambhir who pushed for this transition and gave opportunities to players like Akash Deep and Washington Sundar. Yes, Kuldeep might have been a better choice, but Gambhir showed conviction. There will always be room for growth. However, for someone who has faced criticism and questioning, we should acknowledge and give him the credit he deserves,” he added.
This win marked a significant turnaround for Gambhir, following India’s disappointing defeats of 0-3 to New Zealand at home and 1-3 to Australia.
