R Ashwin has started discussing with Chennai Super Kings about his future with the five-time champions amid speculations that he might leave to join a new team. With over 60 days left before the deadline for retentions, Ashwin spoke to the top officials about his role.

“You can’t take a call on a player’s future as there is still a lot of time left. The last date for retention hasn’t been announced. We have time,” an IPL source told PTI. “The discussions are held before the auction, and Ashwin, being a senior player, has the right to do it. He wants to know about his role ahead of the next season,” he added.

CSK bought him for INR 9.75 crore in the mega auction. He played nine games and picked up seven wickets. There are reports that wicket-keeper Sanju Samson is likely to join Chennai. “We have some players in our mind, but we haven’t discussed anything so far,” the source said.

Chennai finished last, their worst performance in the history of the tournament. MS Dhoni returned as a captain midway following Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, but even he failed to inspire the players.
