Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis played a key role in Trent Rockets’ first home victory of the current Hundred season, making a notable impact with the ball instead of the bat. Stoinis nearly secured a hat-trick after claiming two wickets in consecutive deliveries and finished with a remarkable spell where he conceded no runs against the Northern Superchargers at Trent Bridge on Sunday evening (August 10).
This marked the 33rd instance in T20 cricket where a player has taken at least two wickets in an innings without giving away runs. Out of these, 25 players have claimed two wickets in such a spell, while eight players have taken three wickets without conceding a run. Stoinis now joins a prestigious group that includes Lockie Ferguson, who famously achieved this feat at last year’s T20 World Cup by bowling four consecutive maiden overs against Papua New Guinea.
Stoinis now joins a distinguished group of players, including Suresh Raina, Imran Tahir, Roelof van der Merwe, Atharva Taide, Joe Denly, Andrew Ellis, and Saad Bin Zafar, who have all taken two wickets in a T20 spell without conceding any runs. Nevertheless, Stoinis made history by becoming the first player to achieve this feat in the Hundred
He played a crucial role in breaking the important partnership between Harry Brook and Graham Clark, dismissing the Superchargers’ captain followed by Imad Wasim in successive balls. Despite keeping his hat-trick ball full and straight, Tom Lawes managed to see it off, denying Stoinis a stunning achievement. Stoinis bowled his final dot ball but wasn’t called upon for the rest of the innings.
Mohammad Amir played an important part in guiding the Superchargers past the 120 mark, hitting a few aggressive shots towards the end. However, the Rockets’ formidable batting line-up made them the favourites. Although Imad Wasim and Adil Rashid claimed a few late wickets, the Rockets were always in control. Despite the chase getting tighter than expected, the 2022 men’s champions ultimately secured their second consecutive win of the season.
