As The Hundred Men’s 2025 season progresses, Welsh Fire and Manchester Originals are set to face off in a critical Match 12 at Sophia Gardens. Both teams are looking to find their rhythm and climb the points table after a mixed start to their campaigns.
The Fire have had a difficult start to the tournament, having lost both of their opening matches. They suffered a defeat against Northern Superchargers where Jonny Bairstow‘s 42 runs were not enough to chase down the target. Their second loss came against London Spiritdespite a thrilling 86 from Bairstow which nearly secured a victory. Welsh Fire’s bowlers have shown moments of brilliance, with Riley Meredith taking two wickets in the first match, but they have struggled to contain opposition batters, leaving their own batters with high targets to chase.
The Originals have also had a challenging beginning, though they managed to secure their first win at the third attempt. They lost their first two matches, one against Southern Brave in a close encounter and another against Invincible oval. However, they found their form against the Spirit, successfully defending a total of 163. The Originals’ batting has been a strong point, with Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Heinrich Klaasen all contributing key scores. Their bowling attack, led by Josh Tongue and Sonny Bakerhas also stepped up, showcasing a mix of pace and control.
The pitch at Sophia Gardens is generally known for its balanced nature, offering a fair contest between bat and ball. The surface tends to favor fast bowlers, especially with the new ball, as it provides some movement and bounce. Historically, chasing a target has been a popular and successful strategy at this venue, with the pitch often becoming a little more predictable in the second innings. The average first-innings score in The Hundred matches here has been around 134, indicating that a solid total is achievable but not guaranteed.
