He played 62 Tests and 2 ODIs for Australia from 1957 to 1978. He was the captain of Australia in 39 Tests. Simpson made his debut for Australia in Test cricket against South Africa in 1957. In this format, he scored a total of 4869 runs at an average of 46.81. His Test career includes 10 centuries and 27 half -centuries.

Simpson was an all -rounder batsman, besides him, leg spin bowling. In bowling, he took 71 wickets in his career.
