The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly extended the contract for India men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar till June 2026.

The former fast bowler was offered an extension before the start of IPL 2025, which he accepted. He was appointed as the head of the selection committee in 2023, and during his tenure, the Indian men’s team ended their ICC trophy drought by winning the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Earlier this year, they also won the ICC Champions Trophy and also made it to the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

He has also overseen a successful transition of the Test team. Three stalwarts – Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has announced their retirement in nine months.

In their absences, Shubman Gill stepped up as India’s test captain ahead of the England tour which was ended 2-2 draw.

“Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026, and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” said a BCCI official.

It is understood that BCCI is largely happy with the current selection comprising Ajit Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath.

However, the board is keen on bringing in a new face and could make one change during its annual general body meeting slated to be held in September.

Sharath was promoted to the senior men’s committee from junior selection panel in January 2023, will likely be replaced by a new member.

Meanwhile there’s no guarantee though if Das and Banerjee will be handed extensions. On the other hand, Ratra will have a complete year having been appointed in September 2024.

Besides, the board will also invited applications for the senior women’s and junior men’s selection committees. The current head of women’s committee Neetu David is set to complete five years as selector alongside Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee.
