The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering Shreyas Iyer as a potential successor to Rohit Sharma as ODI captain.
With uncertainty over the ODI captaincy, the board is considering a potential captain for the format. The Indian cricket team is in transition mode as stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have announced their retirements from the Test format.
With only one format they are active in, the board are considering several options for the leadership role. On this occasion, a source has reported that BCCI is considering Shreyas Iyer as the captain for the limted over format.
This comes after the middle-order batter has been snubbed from India’s squad for Asia Cup 2025 and Shubman Gill being groomed for leadership role.
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the T20 vice captain led by Suryakumar Yadav which comes after his recent successful test captain stint on England tour.
With SKY, now 34, they may soon pass on the role, making Gill as the top choice. According to sources, Shreyas Iyer was nearly selected for the Asia Cup T20 squad.
He was left out as 15 players travelled to Dubai. A BCCI source has told the publication that Shubman Gill was chosen as Test captain because no player can captain all three format continously.
Choosing Shubman Gill as the vice-captain in the T20 shows that he is being prepared for the future and despite has done well in ODIs, he is not being considered for the ODI captaincy.
With reports suggest that the ODI series in Australia in October may be the last for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the international career, the have already retired from T20 and Test cricket.
A meeting after the Asia Cup will confirm the plans, where Rohit and Virat Kohli will be consulted. Much depends on when Rohit step aside, but Shreyas Iyer is clearly being lined up as India’s long-term ODI captain.
India will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 against UAE at Dubai International StadiumDubai.
