Shreyas Iyer has done well in the last two IPL season. In 2024, he gave the title to Kolkata Knight Riders and this year Punjab Kings were taken to the final after ten years. Along with this, he also contributed continuously with the bat.
Delhi: Abhishek Nair, former assistant coach of Team India, has expressed surprise for not including Shreyas Iyer in the team announced for the Asia Cup 2025. He also said that Iyer not getting a place in the reserve players also raises questions on the selection process.
Shreyas Iyer has done well in the last two IPL season. In 2024, he gave the title to Kolkata Knight Riders and this year Punjab Kings were taken to the final after ten years. Along with this, he also contributed continuously with the bat.
Talking on Star Sports, Nair said, “I just want to ask the question that when he is such a strong contender, then why isn’t it in the reserve?” He also said that selection meetings are sometimes very interesting, but it is difficult to understand this decision.
Shreyas Iyer played his last T20 match against Australia in December 2023, in which he also scored a half -century. Since then, he has not got a chance in the T20 team. He neither played the T20 World Cup 2024 nor has he been selected for the Asia Cup, while he has been in form in domestic cricket and IPL.
Nair admitted that the selection is based on many reasons many times, but he also indicated that perhaps the personal likes and dislikes are also playing a role in this decision. He said, “Many times the selection also depends on who is being liked a little more. Perhaps Shreyas Iyer was not liked as much.”
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said on the absence of Shreyas Iyer while announcing the team that this is neither Iyer’s fault nor selectors. He said, “We can choose only 15 players. At the moment they will have to wait a little.”
