India’s selection committee revealed a 15-player squad for the upcoming Asia Cup on Tuesday. With Shubman Gill included, there has been considerable debate regarding India’s opening combination. Gill has not played T20Is for over a year, but his exceptional form in the 2025 Indian Premier League and the subsequent Test series in England have contributed to his inclusion in the squad. Additionally, he has been appointed vice-captain. Gill’s selection could result in Sanju Samson missing out on a spot in India’s playing XI.
Samson had been opening the batting for India with Abhishek Sharma in T20Is, but with Gill now in the squad, there is a chance that Samson could be shifted to a lower spot or even miss out on a place in the playing XI.
Devang Gandhi, a former India cricketer and ex-selector, explained that Samson’s failure to maintain consistency has hindered his ability to secure a permanent place in the team.
“Samson’s talent is undeniable, but he is nearing 31. If he hasn’t secured his position yet, it’s because he could never be consistent even in IPL. There are clear concerns with his ability to handle the ball,” Gandhi told TOI.
“He has lagged behind due to difficulties in facing the pace of England bowlers on home soil. However, if he can demonstrate adaptability, he could finally secure his place,” he added.
He emphasised that the Asia Cup presents a chance for Samson to showcase his skills and establish himself in the squad.
“Samson has an opportunity to adapt and make the most of opportunities lower down the order,” he mentioned.
The Asia Cup is set to begin on 9th September, with the final taking place on 28th September. The tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates, with games scheduled in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
