Sourav Ganguly is set to take on the role of head coach for the Pretoria Capitals in the 2026 edition of the SA20 tournament. The franchise revealed the appointment through social media. “The Prince is ready to bring his royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are thrilled to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach.”
This is the first time Ganguly will step into a professional coaching role. He has replaced Jonathan Trott. In a farewell message on X (formerly Twitter), the team thanked Trott for his efforts: “Jonathan Trott, we will always appreciate your leadership and dedication. Best wishes for your next chapter. Once a Capital, always a Capital!”
Ganguly ended his international playing career in 2008 and has since taken up several major roles in cricket administration. He previously served as President of the BCCI, currently heads the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, and also remains President of the Cricket Association of Bengal.
In franchise cricket, his most significant involvement has been with the Delhi Capitals. He worked as a team mentor in 2019, left to take over the BCCI presidency, and later returned as Director of Cricket with JSW Sports.
Now, with the Pretoria Capitals, Ganguly will begin his first full-time assignment as a head coach.
The SA20 organisers have advanced the 2026 edition to avoid overlapping with the Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The competition will run from 26 December 2025 until 25 January 2026. Ganguly’s initial responsibility as coach will be to help select players for the side at the auction on 9 September.
