Overview:

Reports suggest the contenders for the captaincy are Test captain Shubman Gill and batter Shreyas Iyer. Gill was named vice-captain of India’s squad for the Asia Cup, while Iyer was left out of the team.

Former cricketer Suresh Raina recently added a new dimension to the ongoing discussion about India’s next ODI captain. With the focus shifting towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, there is growing speculation that Rohit Sharma might retire from the 50-over format. Reports suggest the contenders for the captaincy are Test captain Shubman Gill and batter Shreyas Iyer. Gill was named vice-captain of India’s squad for the Asia Cup, while Iyer was left out of the team.

Raina shared his view that Gill is currently in a stronger position than Iyer for the captaincy role. However, he also said that all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be the perfect choice to lead India in the 50-over format.

“Shubman Gill, without a doubt, over Iyer. In white-ball cricket, I believe Hardik Pandya has the potential to perform wonders as a captain. Gill, however, has the qualities of a captain. He brings a very positive energy. He’s a player’s captain, and his leadership reminds me of MS Dhoni. I admire the way he carries himself on the field,” Raina told Shubhankar Mishra.

Pandya has been selected for the Asia Cup squad, with the team set to play their opening match against the UAE on September 10. The squad will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav.
