The Rajasthan Royals have confirmed that head coach Rahul Dravid has quit as RR head coach ahead of the IPL 2026, bringing an abrupt end to his second stint with the team.
His stint lasted less than a year after his appointment on September 06, 2024. The former India captain, who played 46 matches for the Royals, took charge following the conclusion of his tenure with the national team.
Under his guidance, Rajasthan Royals managed just four wins from 14 matches, finishing ninth in the points table, ahead of Chennai Super Kings based on net run rate.
Despite being appointed head coach after the T20 World Cup and bringing in Vikram Rathour as batting coach, the team could not convert their potential into results.
According to recent reports, Rahul Dravid was offered another role within the franchise but did not take it. Having first joined Rajasthan Royals in 2011 as a player, he captained the team in 2014 and 2015.
After returning as head coach in 2024, he earned praise for strengthening both the team’s performance and culture.
“Head coach Rahul Dravid will conclude his tenure with the franchise ahead of IPL 2026,” the release stated.
“Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey for many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, instilled strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise,” the statement added.
“As part of the franchise structural review, Rahul had been offered a broader position at the franchise, but has chosen not to take this. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise.”
Rahul Dravid played a key role in RR’s auction strategy and retention decision ahead of a new three-year cycle during 2025 auction. Rajasthan Royals retained Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer.
However, the side had a disappointed campaign due to injury and several close losses. They will be aiming to rebuild the squad during the IPL 2026 auction ahead of the 19th season.
