EXPLAINED: Why India Withdrew Stumping Appeal Against Junaid Siddique In Asia Cup 2025
The Indian bowlers toppled the UAE's batting unit and bowled out the home team for a mere total of 57 in their first game of the Asia Cup 2025. Kuldeep Yadav spearheaded the bowling attack with a four-fer. He only bowled 13 deliveries. Shivam Dube scalped 3 wickets in 2 overs while Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy scalped a wicket each. UAE captain Muhammad Waseem, who scored 19 off 22 balls, was their highest run-scorer.
Sanju Samson, who kept his place in the playing XI, pulled off a great stumping as he caught Junaid Siddique short of his crease.
But India withdrew the appeal. The incident happened in the 13th over.
Siddique missed a ball from Shivam Dube and moved a bit forward to signal that the bowler's towel fell as he was delivering the ball. He wasn't looking for a run. Under the laws, a delivery can be adjudged a dead ball if a bowler's towel falls during his run-out.
"Either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball when…the striker is distracted by any noise or movement or in any other way while preparing to receive, or receiving a delivery.
This shall apply whether the source of the distraction is within the match or outside it," the 20.4.2.7 law states.
In this case, the no-ball wasn't called, but India decided to withdraw the appeal against the batter. Siddique was dismissed on the very next legal delivery. UAE only managed to add to their tally after his dismissal and was bowled out for 59.
Shubman Gill, who is playing a T20I after more than a year, is set to open the innings with Abhishek Sharma. Samson will play as a finished.
Tilak Varma will bat at number 3, while Suryakumar Yadav now bats at number 4.
