The opening batter Smriti Mandhana made a breath-taking century helping the India Women to secure famous 102 run win against Australia at Mullanpur.
Her 117 runs off 91 deliveries included 14 fours and 4 sixes, and helped the side to level the series 1-1. This was her 12th ODI century as an openers and equalled the record for most centuries as an opener in Women ODIs.
She has tallied the century numbers with New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and England’s Tammy Beaumont. She took only 106 innings to register 12 centuries while Bates took 130 and Beaumont achieved the feat in 113 innings.
Smriti Mandhana went past the triple digit mark in just 77 deliveries and registered the second fastest ODI century by an Indian. The fastest for the team is also held by herself, as she smashed a 70-ball century against Ireland in Rajkot.
Batting first, Mandhana’s knock dominated the visitors anchoring India’s innings. Some notable contributions from Deepti Sharma (40), Richa Ghosh (29), Pratika Rawal (25) and Sneh Rana (24) helped the hosts on posting 292 runs.
Darcie Brown’s three wicket haul and Ashleigh Gardner’s two dismissals prevented India on crossing 300-run mark.
Australia’s line up faltered early as Kranti Goud and Renuka Singh restricting Alyssa Healy’s side for 25 runs in the powerplay.
Despite Ellyse Perry (44) and Annabel Sutherland (45) made some valuable contribution, the duo’s dismissal powered Australia’s collapse in the second ODI.
Australians eventually bowled out for 190 runs in 40.5 overs, losing their last six wickets for 56 runs. Kranti Goud’s 3 wicket haul and Deepti Sharma’s two dismissals has highlighted clincial bowling display from the Women in Blues.
India went on to break Australia’s 13-match winning streak in ODIS and gave their first home win since February 2007 in Chennai.
The decider game of the series will be played on September 20 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
