After the perfect start by openers Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal, India failed to capitalize on a humongous score, and still, one could say they did well as they managed to put up a score of 330. While they could have got a lot more, their score tonight is the highest ever score by India in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. Not only that, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian side made Australia concede their highest-ever total in a World Cup.
But during the first innings, there was an instance that saw Harmanpreet Kaur absolutely lose her cool at one of her teammates. During the middle overs, and after both openers were sent back to the pavilion in quick succession, India needed to steady the boat to be able to keep scoring at a regular pace. And Harmanpreet Kaur, along with Harleen Deol, was doing a wonderful job of it.
But just when all seemed ot be going well, India’s number 3 batter made a mistake that could’ve cost Harmanpreet her wicket. The Indian skipper played the ball towards cover off Megan Schutt’s bowling and started running hard for a quick single. After Harmanpreet Kaur was already halfway down the pitch, Harleen Deol, the non-striker, signaled her to go back, denying her the single.
Thanks to a poor throw, Harmanpreet could make it back safely, hence saving herself from a very embarrassing dismissal. Once she was safe, Harleen wasn’t. As her skipper sent a barrage of angry words and glares towards her direction.
Nevertheless, Harmanpreet Kaur succumbed soon after to Megan Schutt after holing out directly to a fielder at point. Harleen, Richa Ghosh, and Jemimah Rodrigues went on to have great starts but failed to convert big later in the innings.
