Delhi: Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir met the players of the West Indies cricket team after the recently concluded second test match and inspired them for their struggle. Gambhir told the players that even though Caribbean cricket is going through its lowest phase at the moment, the “aim” of the current players should be to inspire the next generation.
After three disappointing innings (162, 146 and 248) in Ahmedabad and New Delhi, the West Indies team showed great fight in the last innings of the series. The team scored 390 runs and not only avoided innings defeat, but also dragged the match till the fifth day. However, India won the match by seven wickets.
After the match, West Indies head coach Darren Sammy invited Gautam Gambhir to the visiting team’s dressing room, where Gambhir interacted with the players and appreciated their efforts.
In a video released by BCCI, Gambhir said, “When I talk about international cricket, many teams play because they love the game, but there are very few teams who have a purpose to play the game like West Indies.”
He asked the players to remember their purpose, because purpose is always greater than love and affection. Gambhir said, “When I look at you guys, I feel that you can inspire the next generation of West Indies cricket.”
This former Indian opener admitted that West Indies cricket is currently facing many challenges both on and off the field. He told the players not to get distracted by these difficulties and take inspiration from their recent innings.
He said, “I know it is easy for me to stand here and talk about performance, but your second innings should inspire you. You have a bigger purpose to play and inspire the next generation.”
He further said that despite domestic challenges and difficult conditions, the players’ hard work with a smile and playing for the country is the biggest strength of West Indies cricket.
Gambhir gave an emotional message at the end of his address. He said that world cricket needs a strong West Indies team. Gambhir said, “You may think I am saying this casually, but this is said from the heart – West Indies cricket does not need world cricket, but world cricket needs West Indies cricket.”
Gambhir advised the players to remember the importance of their jersey and wear it with pride. He said that the opportunity to play Test cricket is very special and it is an honor which not every T20 player gets.
