Overview:
As the match began, the official BCCI scorecard incorrectly listed Sarfaraz as the opening batter, who was shown dismissed for a duck by pace bowler Auqib Nabi.
A mix-up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) drew attention at the start of the Ranji Trophy, when scorers were confused between Mumbai cricketers Sarfaraz Khan and his younger brother Musheer Khan.
The incident occurred during Mumbai’s opening game against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar. As the match began, the official BCCI scorecard incorrectly listed Sarfaraz as the opening batter, who was shown dismissed for a duck by pace bowler Auqib Nabi.
This sparked immediate surprise among fans, as Sarfaraz is known for playing in the middle order. His unexpected appearance at the top of the order, as per the scoreboard, left many puzzled.
In reality, it was Musheer Khan who opened the innings. The scoring error led to widespread confusion until it was later rectified on the official site. Though the mistake was resolved, it highlighted the importance of accurate data handling in domestic cricket.
The BCCI quickly spotted the error and updated the scorecard to show that it was Musheer who was dismissed on the third delivery of the game. However, the correction came too late.
Sarfaraz later took the crease at number five and immediately made an impact by hitting three boundaries in quick succession, putting the pressure back onto the Jammu and Kashmir bowlers.
Following Musheer’s dismissal, Ayush Mhatre and Ajinkya Rahane built a partnership of 61 runs for the second wicket before Mhatre was out. Rahane was dismissed shortly afterwards.
