In fact, considering Vaibhav’s less experience and young age, the question has arisen whether the selection committee took the right decision?
Delhi: It is no less than a sensational news that Bihar has appointed Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the vice-captain of the team for the first two rounds of Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. Captain Saqibul Ghani is there. In fact, considering Vaibhav’s less experience and young age, the question has arisen whether the selection committee took the right decision? It may happen that whatever little shine Vaibhav has shown in his cricket career so far, this responsibility given to him so suddenly does not allow him to flourish properly. Let’s discuss all this:
Why did the selectors finally make Vaibhav Suryavanshi the captain: It is clear that the selectors were impressed by the brilliance of Vaibhav’s batting in the last few months. Even after IPL 2025, Vaibhav’s bat did not stop and after England, he continued his excellent form for the India Under-19 team in the Australia tour as well. Even scored 100 in 78 balls in the first 4 days in Brisbane and 133 runs in 3 innings. Earlier in England, 355 runs in 5 matches at 174.01 strike rate. So as far as this type of cricket is concerned, runs have been scored in it.
Ranji Trophy, neither IPL nor Under-19 cricket: The selector did not see whether Vaibhav has given any evidence that he will be successful in first class cricket also? Vaibhav made his debut in Ranji Trophy at the age of just 12 years and 284 days (this is the age on the first day of the match) and is currently number 7 in the list of youngest to play first class cricket but is number 1 in the list of cricketers of this century. Age as on 18 October 2025 is 14 years 205 days. So did he achieve anything by making his Ranji Trophy debut so soon?
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s poor first class cricket record, which was not seen: Before becoming the vice captain, he had scored only 100 runs in 10 innings of 5 first class matches at an average of 10 and on this record, he would not have got a place even in the Ranji team, let alone making him the vice captain. These 5 matches were also played in the same stormy style and out of 100 runs, 78 runs were scored from boundary shots (18 fours + 1 six). One who wants to make his red ball career does not play like this. Even after becoming the vice-captain, there was no sense of responsibility and in the one Ranji match he played this season, he scored 14 runs in an innings (all from boundary shots and in only 5 balls). This is not the way to play first class cricket. Virender Sehwag also did not start his career like this.
The selectors would have first allowed him to become eligible for a place in the team: It is clear that even the selectors got carried away in the euphoria of recent glory. The history of cricket is full of such examples in which every player who had initial brilliance did not play the same way and did not even make a career. Therefore, the burden of captaincy thinking was unnecessarily imposed on Vaibhav. Now it will not take much time for the coincidence of becoming captain in Ranji Trophy to arise. Young age record will be made but will Bihar cricket benefit from it?
This responsibility is neither good for Bihar Cricket nor for Vaibhav himself: On his journey to fame, he needed help to flourish as a player. Any good coach will not support him by giving him responsibility at this time and increasing his worries. All this will bring them pressure instead of benefit. Sachin and Virat were also not immediately made the captains of Mumbai or Delhi. Vaibhav was first made the regular captain in junior cricket and there he learned the tricks of captaincy. At this time, such responsibility will divert the focus from batting, which will not be good for your career at all. Such haste does not enhance cricket career.
