MoU signed between IIT Kharagpur and Imaging, one million US dollars received for MRI system

Kharagpur, 22 October (Read News). In a new landmark initiative in India’s medical technology (medtech) sector, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has joined hands with US-based Imaging Inc. This partnership aims to develop India’s first indigenous “Low-Field Bedside MRI System”, which will make medical imaging more accessible, affordable and portable.

This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Director of IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Signed between Suman Chakraborty and Institute alumnus and founder of Imaging, Dr. Jyoti Chatterjee (Mechanical Engineering, 1977 batch).

Dr. Chatterjee has given an amount of one million US dollars as initial investment for this project. Going forward, IIT Kharagpur and Imaging Inc are planning to jointly raise an additional amount of $5 million to accelerate the process of prototype development and commercial use of this innovation.

Director of IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Chakraborty said that this partnership is a big step towards realizing the resolve of self-reliant India. Through collaboration with academic research and industry, we are working to bring medical imaging technology from the laboratory directly to the patient’s bedside.

Experts believe that this initiative will prove to be a milestone in the direction of democratizing advanced medical imaging technology in India. With this, MRI facilities will be made available from big hospitals to rural health centers.
