Overview:

Since his century in the 2025 Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, Gill has failed to score a half-century in 14 consecutive white-ball matches.

Former Indian Cricketer Kris Srikkanth suggested that Gautam Gambhir should not make hasty changes following India’s loss to Australia in the ODI series. Since Gambhir took charge last year, India have struggled to maintain consistency.

While they have dominated in T20Is, with 20 wins from 22 matches under Gambhir, their results in the other formats have been mixed since his appointment.

The Indian side has tasted success in the Champions Trophy, but they’ve also endured setbacks, losing bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka and Australia, as well as Test series to New Zealand and Australia.

“Under Gambhir, India’s results have been inconsistent. He should avoid making changes. It’s crucial to stick with the right combination. We performed well in England, particularly with standout performances from Shubman Gill and the bowlers,” Kris Srikkanth said.

India have seen Test retirements and captaincy changes in the Test and ODI formats since Gambhir assumed the role of head coach. Kris Srikkanth believes that Shubman Gill is under pressure, leading to his prolonged slump in white-ball cricket. Since his century in the 2025 Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, Gill has failed to score a half-century in 14 consecutive white-ball matches.

“After his strong performances in England, he’s probably putting too much pressure on himself. He shouldn’t do that and just focus on playing his natural game. He is under pressure, especially with the added responsibility of captaining the team and opening alongside Rohit Sharma,” he added.

“On the other hand, there’s a lot of talk about why Yashasvi Jaiswal isn’t playing, and all of that only adds to his pressure. But he’s a fantastic player and will overcome this. He just needs to stick to his natural game. Once he scores a couple of big knocks at home against South Africa, he’ll be back on track,” he concluded.

Even with his recent struggles in white-ball cricket, Gill has been outstanding in Tests since he took over as captain in England.
