According to recent reports, the Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Abhishek Nayar as head coach for the IPL 2026 season.

He will be replacing the outgoing Chandrakant Pandit ahead of the exciting season. The reports say that Nayar was informed of the decision last week, and a formal announcement is expected soon.

The former Indian all-rounder has long been embedded in KKR’s system through academy and support staff roles.

The former Indian support-staff member rejoined the Knights’ setup this year and is regarded for his hands-on player-development work with several India internationals over the past decade.

He has also served as the head coach of the UP Warriorz in the WPL. This also essentially leads to an overlap, and the clarification on dual-role logistics will come once the announcement is official.

He has been part of the KKR staff from 2018 to 2024, contributing to player development, talent scouting and team strategy. Known for his analytical approach and calm leadership style, he has played a key role in mentoring several KKR stars, including Dinesh Karthik and Shreyas Iyer.

He returned to the franchise in April 2025 after his contract as India’s assistant coach with the India Men’s team was terminated by the BCCI.

His brief national stint under India head coach Gautam Gambhir further added to his credentials as a coach.

Before turning to coaching, Abhishek Nayar enjoyed a decorated domestic career with Mumbai, becoming one of the Ranji Trophy’s most consistent performers and earning three ODI caps for India in 2009.

He worked extensively with high-profile cricketers such as Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul. The latter has credited Nayar for his growth as a white ball player. These experiences have shaped his reputation as a coach who combines technical insight with empathy and individualised guidance.

Abhishek Nayar’s appointment represents both continuity and change for Kolkata Knight Riders – continuity through a familiar face who understands the franchise’s ethos and change through the potential for renewed energy and perspective.

Abhishek Nayar will be facing the challenge of title contention. His journey from domestic stalwart to franchise leader reflects not just personal evolution but the growing prominence of Indian coaches in the IPL landscape.
