Deepti Sharma: Once an ordinary girl playing in the streets of Uttar Pradesh, Deepti Sharma has today become the most stable and influential all-rounder of the Indian women’s cricket team.
Deepti is the player who stops runs with spin, and has the power to win matches with the bat when needed. Whenever the team needed, Deepti Sharma has taken the lead, be it bowling or batting. In the semi-final against Australia, he broke the rhythm with his accurate spin, took two wickets and in the end made a big contribution in taking India to the final by adding 24 important runs in 17 balls. She is the youngest among her siblings. Her father is retired from the Indian Railways department and despite having a large family, Deepti’s childhood dreams were always different.At the age of just 9, he developed a deep love for cricket. His brother Sumit Sharma, a former Uttar Pradesh fast bowler, initially became his first coach.One day when Sumit was doing net practice with his teammates at the Eklavya Sports Stadium in Agra, Deepti was asked to pick up the ball that had gone out of the field and throw it. Deepti hit that ball straight on the stumps from a distance of 50 meters.
Present there, India’s national women’s team selector Hemlata Kala recognized Deepti’s talent in that one throw and from that moment began a journey which will always be remembered in the history of Indian cricket.
Born on 24 August 1997, Deepti made her ODI debut against South Africa in 2014 at the age of just 18 and created history by taking 6 wickets against Sri Lanka in 2016. She became the youngest bowler for India to take six wickets in ODI at such a young age.
In 2017, she played an explosive inning of 188 runs against Ireland and made a world record by making an opening partnership of 320 runs with Punam Raut.
The same year, she played a key role in taking India to the final of the Women’s World Cup, scoring 216 runs and taking 12 wickets in the tournament.In domestic cricket, Deepti performed brilliantly for Uttar Pradesh and then Bengal. She was the top run scorer in the 2018–19 season with two centuries and one half-century. In 2019, he played for Western Storm in England’s Kia Super League and became a part of the champion team. After this, he also performed strongly in WBBL (Sydney Thunder) and The Hundred (London Spirit).
UP Warriors bought her for Rs 2.6 crore in the 2023 Women’s Premier League auction. The very next year, on 8 March 2024, she created a new milestone by scoring the first Indian hat-trick in WPL history against Delhi Capitals and became the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the 2024 season.
