Skipper Alyssa Healy will miss Sydney Sixers' opening clash in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 against Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground in Perth on Sunday, November 9. The wicketkeeper-batter is recovering from a thumb injury she sustained during the Women's World Cup 2025 semi-final against India at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on October 30.

Healy was keeping up to the stumps when fast bowler Kim Garth was trying to stop the carnage from Jemimah Rodrigues, who was firing on all cylinders in the knockout fixture.

The Indian batter attempted a late cut on 60, the ball took a sharp top-edge and smashed into the end of Healy’s thumb. The Aussie captain was seen wincing in pain, but she received treatment and continued keeping wickets, not gauging the extent of the injury.

Speaking about the injury on the Willow Talk podcast after returning home, Healy appeared with her thumb in a splint and admitted the moment had been noticeable to many.

“It’s WBBL time, so it’s not unlike me to have some sort of injury...I copped a little knock in the semi-final which I’m sure a few people probably saw, but we’ll see what unfolds over the next four weeks," Healy said.

The Sixers later confirmed that Healy would not travel to Perth for their season opener against the Scorchers, describing the injury as “minor” but significant enough to require rest. The team added that she will be monitored through next week and may return early in the tournament if she is comfortable batting and wicketkeeping while wearing a splint.

Healy has had her struggles with injuries of late. She missed Australia's last two league games after suffering a calf strain. The 35-year-old had a brilliant campaign with the bat, amassing 299 runs in five innings at an average of 74.75 and a strike rate of 125.19. Healy smashed enthralling centuries against India and Bangladesh.
