A solid knock from Mark Chapman and Mitchell Santner’s three-fer has helped New Zealand to secure a thrilling 3-run victory against the West Indies, played on November 06 at Eden Park, Auckland.
By this win, they levelled the ODI series 1-1 in the West Indies tour of New Zealand 2025 and will be aiming to extend their winning streak in the series during the third T20I.
After being invited to bat first, New Zealand’s Tim Robinson and Devon Conway opened the innings while Jayden Seales opened the bowling attack.
The opener duo made a decent start as they scored 47 runs in the power play. Romario Shepherd went on to get the first breakthrough, dismissing Devon Conway for 39 runs.
Robinson scored 16 runs before being dismissed by Matthew Forde. Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman went on to stabilise the innings before Ravindra went back to the dugout for 11 runs.
Meanwhile, Chapman went on to smash fifty and scored 78 runs while playing along with Daryl Mitchell. Jason Holder went on to bag the wicket of Mark Chapman for 78 runs, while Bracewell got dismissed by Chase for 5 runs.
With Daryl Mitchell (28*) and Mitchell Santner (18*) at the crease, New Zealand went on to score 207 runs in their 20-over innings.
Roston Chase picked up two wickets while Matthew Forde, Jason Holder, and Romario Shepherd bagged one wicket each.
In the pursuit of chasing 208 runs, West Indies’ Brandon King and Alick Athanaze opened the innings while Jacob Duffy opened the bowling attack.
Jacob Duffy got an early dismissal, sending Brandon King for duck. However, Athanaze and Shai Hope went on to anchor the innings, scoring 49 runs for the second wicket.
Ish Sodhi bagged the wicket of Athanaze for 33 runs and went on to dismiss Auguste for 7 runs. With Shai Hope’s dismissal for 24 runs, West Indies lost 4 wickets for 74 runs.
Jason Holder tried to hold up the innings, but his dismissal further troubled West Indies. However, Rovman Powell’s knock helped West Indies get back in the game, and solid knocks from Romario Shepherd and Matthew Forde have helped the side to put up a fight.
Romario Shepherd scored 34 runs while Matthew Forde added 29* runs for the side. Finally, the West Indies went on to score 204 runs in their 20-over innings and suffered a narrow 3-run defeat.
Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi went on to bag three wickets each, while Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson bagged one wicket each.
Mark Chapman was named the Player of the Match. Speaking on the post-match presentation, ” It’s always nice to strike a few out of the middle. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one today, there were a few contributions throughout. I thought Devon and Robo did a great job seeing off the new ball, it looked pretty tricky up front.”
The 3rd T20I match of the series will be played on November 09 at Saxton Oval, Nelson.
