India international Pratika Rawal confirmed that she will receive a winners’ medal as part of the Women’s ODI World Cup-winning squad, which beat South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on November 2.
The opener, who fractured her ankle during India’s final league game against Bangladesh, was replaced by Shafali Verma in the 15-member squad ahead of the knockouts.
Since ICC rules say a player, once withdrawn, will not be counted as part of the final 15-member group, Pratika did not receive a medal with her teammates during the post-match presentation ceremony.
However, during the team’s visit to the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, it was observed that Pratika, with a cast on her foot, also had a winners’ medal.
“I have my own medal now. One of the support staff had lent me theirs temporarily because mine hadn’t reached on time. Jay (Shah) sir has sent me a medal, someone told me. I was so happy, but people made a big deal of it online. It will take some time, but it will come to me,” she clarified.
