India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has expressed gratitude after returning to light recovery work following his serious injury on the tour of Australia. Iyer, who suffered a laceration to the spleen and internal bleeding during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25, shared an emotional update on social media.
“Sun’s been a great therapy. Grateful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care,” Iyer wrote on Instagram, along with a picture of himself soaking up the sun.
The 30-year-old sustained the injury while taking a catch to dismiss Alex Carey, clutching his rib cage moments after completing the effort. He was immediately rushed to a Sydney hospital, where scans revealed internal bleeding and a ruptured spleen, requiring urgent surgical intervention.

In a statement issued on November 1, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer had been discharged from hospital and that medical specialists in both Australia and India were pleased with his progress. The Indian team’s doctor, Rizwan Khan, stayed with Iyer throughout his treatment in Sydney to oversee the process.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia extended the board’s “heartfelt gratitude” to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, as well as to Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for their care and expertise during Iyer’s recovery.
Iyer is now expected to return home shortly after completing follow-up consultations in Sydney. He will remain out of action for the next few months as he works towards full recovery and match fitness.
