Former Bangladesh captain and BCB’s current vice-president Faruque Ahmed has been admitted to a hospital in Dhaka following a cardiac arrest on Sunday.

The BCB officials said that Faruque Ahmed experienced severe chest pain around noon and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed an angiogram and found a blockage in one of his arteries.

A stent has been fixed, and he is currently under observation in the ICU. “He has been feeling unwell since last night. This afternoon, he was taken to the hospital. After an angiogram, a blockage was found in his heart, and doctors inserted a stent in the evening. Now he is in the CCU,” said a BCB official.

Faruque represented the national team from 1984 to 1999 and also captained the side during his career. After his retirement, he has worked with BCB twice as a national selector.

He has played a total of 7 ODIs for Bangladesh, where he scored 105 runs with a high score of 57. He maintained an average of 15 runs and remains an important figure in the history of Bangladesh cricket.

Faruque Ahmed took over as BCB president in August 2024 following the resignation of Nazmul Hassan, and he held the post for nine months before stepping down as the BCB president.

Speaking to the media, the 59-year-old said, “The advisor said that they don’t want to continue with me. I have not made any decision yet (regarding resignation). Let’s see what happens.”

When asked about his resignation, he said, “No, I’m not resigning. There’s no reason for me to resign at the moment. They haven’t given me any explanation, so why should I step down?”

Aminul Bulbul has taken over as the BCB president, and Faruque Ahmed joined the BCB after being elected in the club category in October 2024 and was later elected as the vice-president.
