Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) seem to be in a mood to make major changes in their team before the upcoming IPL 2026 season. According to the report of Cricbuzz, the franchise can continue with Ajinkya Rahane as the captain for the IPL 2026 season. However, the team had a very disappointing performance in the last season. In the 2025 season, KKR finished seventh and won only 5 out of 14 matches.

At the same time, there were discussions regarding Rahane recently that KKR can hand over the command of captaincy to Varun Chakraborty in his place. But now reports say that the franchise is not going in this direction.

It is noteworthy that Rahane was the highest run-scorer of KKR last season with 390 runs, strike rate of around 150, but his batting position caused a lot of damage to the balance of the team. He fixed himself at number 3 throughout the season, due to which Venkatesh Iyer (big purchase of Rs 23.75 crore) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi could not play in their natural slots. This had a direct impact on the team’s combination and later KKR sometimes even excluded Venkatesh and sometimes Angkrish from the playing-11.

According to this report, KKR can release Indian young star all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. However, there is a possibility that the team may try to buy him again at a lower price in the auction. Apart from this, according to the report, wicketkeeper-cum-opener Quinton de Kock and fast bowler Enrique Nortje can also be released, which will give relief to the team in its purse of around Rs 9.9 crore.

On the other hand, there has been a major reshuffle in the coaching staff also. Abhishek Nair has been made the head coach, while Tim Southee and Shane Watson have been given the responsibility of bowling and batting coaches respectively. It is clear from this that KKR is going to come up with a completely new plan for 2026.
