The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 trade window has delivered a major tactical shift, with five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) officially confirming the acquisition of experienced India all-rounder Shardul Thakur. The high-profile move, executed via an all-cash transaction from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for his existing fee of INR 2 crore, bolsters MI’s Indian core.
This strategic addition provides the Mumbai franchise with much-needed depth, balance, and proven ability with both pace bowling and lower-order hitting. Thakur’s arrival signals MI’s proactive intent to finalize their squad foundation ahead of the impending player retention deadline. The transaction was officially acknowledged by the IPL, injecting fresh talent into the Mumbai squad as they prepare for a renewed title challenge. His extensive experience across multiple franchises makes him a valuable asset ready to contribute immediately to the team’s composition for the upcoming season.
Mumbai executed the strategic acquisition of Shardul, a Mumbai-based domestic captain, recognizing the immense value of an established Indian pace-bowling all-rounder in the demanding T20 format. The all-cash deal secured Thakur from the Lucknow for his existing player fee of INR 2 crore, an efficient move that strengthens MI’s domestic reserves for the upcoming season. Shardul’s addition is expected to significantly enhance the Mumbai’ bowling lineup, providing a dependable Indian option capable of bowling in crucial phases.
Although Shardul had a mixed 2025 season, finishing with an economy rate of 11.02, his initial performances for LSG highlighted his potential as a clutch player. He kicked off his season impressively, taking six wickets across two matches, including a remarkable four-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabadproving his ability to deliver match-winning spells. MI will be heavily relying on his versatility, as he also provides valuable batting contributions lower down the order, evidenced by his career strike rate of 139.48 and an aggregate of 325 runs in his career.
Shardul’s move to the Mumbai has cemented his status as a truly unique figure in IPL history due to his extensive career journey across multiple franchises. The transfer marks Shardul Thakur as the first cricketer ever to be traded three times in the IPL, a significant milestone that underscores his consistent demand and utility across the league. His IPL career has seen him represent a staggering total of seven different teams, which is a rare feat that showcases his adaptability to various team dynamics and management styles. Thakur first came into the trade market spotlight when he was purchased by Rising Pune Supergiant from Punjab Kings in 2017.
This was followed by his second trade move, which occurred prior to the 2023 season, Thakur was traded from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riderswith both previous transactions also being all-cash deals. By joining MI, he also enters a select group of players who have played for both MI and CSK, the two most successful franchises in IPL history. Despite going unsold at the 2025 mega auction and securing a contract with Essex for the County Championshipshe was immediately roped in by LSG as an injury replacement for Mohsin Khan before being traded to MI. His overall IPL track record boasts 107 wickets in 105 matches at a decent average of 30.31, reflecting his longevity and impact in the fast-paced T20 format.
