Rajasthan Royals have appointed former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara as head coach for the 2026 IPL season, adding a new responsibility to his role. After his tenure as Director of Cricket, Sangakkara takes over from Rahul Dravid, with the mission of guiding the team to their second-ever IPL trophy.

The 48-year-old Sangakkara returns to Rajasthan Royals after a successful stint as head coach from 2021 to 2024, with Rahul Dravid stepping in for the 2025 season. Following the conclusion of the 2025 tournament, it was confirmed that Dravid would not be retained. Sangakkara led the Royals to the 2022 IPL final and secured a playoff spot in 2024.

Rajasthan Royals had a disappointing IPL 2025 under Rahul Dravid, finishing ninth in the standings with only 8 points from 14 games. The season was clouded by controversy, with persistent rumours suggesting a rift between Dravid and Sanju Samson, although these were ultimately dismissed.

“I’m proud to step back into the role of Head Coach and to keep working with such a talented group of players. I’m also excited to have a great coaching team supporting me. Vikram, Trevor, Shane, and Sid each bring their own expertise, and together, we’re committed to ensuring the players are as prepared as possible,” Sangakkara stated in an official announcement.

“We have a shared vision for where we want to head as a team, and our goal is to create a side that plays with focus, determination, and intent,” he continued.

Vikram Rathour has been promoted to the role of assistant coach, where he will work closely with Sangakkara on areas like batting development, match strategies, and overall team readiness. Shane Bond, the former New Zealand pacer, will retain his position as the fast bowling coach, ensuring stability in the pace department. Additionally, Trevor Penney and Sid Lahiri will continue in their respective roles as assistant coach and performance coach.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Kumar back as Head Coach. After evaluating the team’s current needs, we felt that his prior experience with the squad, his leadership qualities, and his strong connection to the Royals’ culture would provide the perfect mix of continuity and stability,” said Manoj Badale, Lead Owner of Rajasthan Royals.

“Kumar has always earned our full confidence as a leader. His clear vision, composure, and cricketing acumen will be crucial in steering the squad through this next phase,” he added.

Rajasthan Royals have completed a key deal, sending Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings while bringing Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja. The team is now gearing up for the auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
