Indian cricket team captain Shubhman Gill’s health suddenly deteriorated on Saturday (November 15) night, when he complained of severe neck pain. Earlier, Gill had felt a blow to his neck while batting on the second day of the first Test match and retired hurt. After this he was admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata, where his health condition is being monitored.

BCCI has issued an update regarding the health of Shubman Gill, which said that Gill has now been ruled out of the first Test and now there is doubt over his playing in the second Test (which is to be played in Guwahati from November 22).

The cause of Gill’s injury is said to be a blow to a ball from Simon Harmer during a slog sweep. Initially the injury seemed mild, but the pain increased with time. The medical team provided immediate treatment, but by the evening Gill’s condition deteriorated and he had to be taken out of the stadium on a stretcher. A cervical collar was put to support the neck and then he was sent to the hospital.

Captaincy given to Rishabh Pant

Following Gill’s injury, Rishabh Pant was made the acting captain while batting in the second innings against South Africa, indicating that the team management is not expecting Gill’s return at the moment. Only if the situation of the match is very serious, only then can Gill get a chance to play.

BCCI statement

“Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on the second day of the ongoing Test match against South Africa in Kolkata. After the end of the day’s play, he was immediately taken to the hospital. His condition is being continuously monitored,” the BCCI said in a statement.
