NEW DELHI: Mitchell Starc continued to etch his name in the record books during the first Ashes Test against England in Perth on Saturday. The Australian pace spearhead, who claimed a career-best 7/58 in the first innings, went on to record his best Ashes performance by completing a ten-wicket haul in the match.
Starc reached the landmark with the wicket of England captain Ben Stokes, which was his third wicket of the second innings.
With this performance, Starc became the first Australian fast bowler in more than three decades to claim a ten-wicket haul in an Ashes Test. The last time an Australian seamer achieved the feat was Craig McDermott, who returned match figures of 11/157 at the WACA during the 1990/91 Ashes series.

Starc’s continued success against Stokes has added another chapter to their compelling rivalry. He has now dismissed the England skipper 11 times, having conceded 191 runs off 309 deliveries to him, a tally that leaves Stokes just one behind Jonny Bairstow (12) on the list of batters most frequently removed by the Australian left-arm quick.
Looking back on his seven-wicket demolition on Day 1, Starc said his plan was simply to maintain an attacking approach, especially with Australia missing senior pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
“I mean, it’s always the plan, isn’t it? But it doesn’t always happen that way. I’ve just been pretty fortunate to have done it a few times. But it’s always been my role to be aggressive, look for wickets,” Starc told reporters.
“I’ve never been one to worry about economy rates. My role is to go looking for wickets, especially with the new ball, and hopefully make inroads into the opposition,” he added.
