It has been a month since India won the Women’s ODI World Cup title, but for captain Harmanpreet Kaur, it still feels like yesterday. Wherever she goes, people keep reminding her of the team’s incredible success and how it created history, after years of heartbreak.

After three defeats on the trot, India came from behind to qualify for the semifinals and eventually won the title at the DY Patil Stadium, beating South Africa. While it was an emotional moment for Harmanpreet and her colleagues, watching the final from the venue, former India captain Rohit Sharma, too, could not control his emotions.

“I was there, that’s the moment you live and work hard for and I am sure a lot of hard work has gone in before that World Cup started,” Rohit said at the schedule announcement for the upcoming T20 World Cup on Tuesday, as Harmanpreet nodded her head in agreement.

After losing three consecutive games, which included a narrow defeat against England in Indore, things got tricky for the Indian team.

But the team regrouped and bounced back in style.

“I was just asking her (Harmanpreet) whether the coach (Amol Muzumdar) was calm after the England game. And, the answer was not surprising. He is very passionate. I know him well and understand him very well, since he was my captain in Mumbai,” Rohit said.

“Even though I was not there, I could feel what happened after the England game. For them to lift the trophy from that point was a great feeling not just for me but for the entire nation…”
