Overview:

Pathan also spoke about the importance of New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, particularly for teams that play on pitches offering assistance to spin.

Irfan Pathan feels Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to make an aggressive move for Cameron Green at the IPL 2026 auction as they look to rebuild following Andre Russell’s retirement. The former India all-rounder believes Green’s ability to influence games with both bat and ball makes him an ideal option to step into that role. With the IPL 2026 mini auction scheduled for December 16, franchises are intensifying their planning ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested event. Green remains one of the most discussed names in the auction pool, with his versatility continuing to draw strong interest despite shifting team dynamics across the league.

Pathan mentioned that Green may become a key target for teams aiming to restore balance and versatility in their squads. “Cameron Green is a high-class all-rounder, and with a big budget going into the auction, KKR are likely to go after him. With Andre Russell no longer in the picture, Green could serve as a near-similar option, offering impact with both bat and ball, even if he bats in the top order. I also see Chennai Super Kings being interested in his services,” the former India batter said.

Pathan also spoke about the importance of New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, particularly for teams that play on pitches offering assistance to spin. Mitchell’s familiarity with Indian conditions and his comfort against spin bowling remain among his biggest strengths.

“Daryl Mitchell is a top-class overseas batter who has consistently performed well against spin, which explains why the Chennai Super Kings earlier invested around INR 14 crore in him. His ease on slow and turning surfaces, particularly in Chennai-like conditions, enhances his chances. With extensive experience in both international and league cricket, he brings the calmness and skill that teams expect from a dependable overseas option.”

All eyes will be on Kolkata Knight Riders’ auction plans, with the three-time champions heading into the bidding process with the highest available funds, amounting to INR 64.30 crore.
