There was a big controversy over the decisions of the snicko technique in the Adelaide Ashes Test. The decisions to Alex Carey and Jamie Smith raised questions. Mitchell Starc expressed displeasure over the technology. Later the company providing the technology admitted its mistake and explained the reason for the wrong sound.
Delhi: Snicko technique once again became a cause of controversy in the Ashes Test being played in Adelaide. After the second day’s play, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc expressed his displeasure over this technique. He called it the worst technology ever.
The debate regarding Snico started from day one. Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey was saved despite an appeal for being caught out on 72 runs. A slight noise was seen in the replayed footage, but the umpire considered him not out considering the distance between the bat and the ball. After this, Kerry put the team in a strong position by scoring a century.
This issue came to light again the next day when England batsman Jamie Smith got stuck in two close decisions. His glove was seen moving on one ball and he was also caught in the slips. The on-field umpire sent the decision up, but there was no noise in the snicko. It was considered a helmet impact and Smith survived.
Stark became very angry after this decision. His voice was heard clearly in the stump mic. He said Snicko should be removed.
After a few overs, Smith once again came into controversy. He tried to play a pull shot and the ball went into the hands of the wicketkeeper. This time, after the ball passed through Snicko, a noise was seen and Smith was given out. This raised more questions on the technology.
After the first day, Carey himself admitted that he felt the ball had hit his bat lightly. Later, the company providing Snico technology also admitted that the mistake was due to the wrong voice being used. This controversy brought more discussion on technology than the match.
