India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said the team is eager to return to on-field action after a brief lull following their historic ODI World Cup triumph, as they prepare to kick off a five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka on Sunday.
India have not played since lifting the ODI World Cup at home more than a month ago, but Harmanpreet insisted the break has only heightened the players’ hunger. Speaking ahead of the series opener, she said the squad has been waiting for this moment to shift focus towards next year’s T20 World Cup.
“It was hectic after the World Cup, but I don’t mind that kind of schedule. In fact, I want such schedules after every World Cup,” Harmanpreet said. “We have been waiting to get back on the field because, at the end of the day, that’s where we enjoy ourselves the most. This series is very important for us and we are really looking forward to starting well.”

With the T20 World Cup just six months away, Harmanpreet underlined the importance of giving younger players exposure at this stage. She said the upcoming series is a key step in shaping India’s approach for the global event.
“Our end goal is the next T20 World Cup and before that we want to play a lot of T20 cricket,” she said. “This is the right time to give new players a fair chance to understand what is required at that level. We want to play with a free mindset and continue the brand of T20 cricket we have played over the last couple of years.”
Harmanpreet also acknowledged Sri Lanka as a formidable opponent, particularly in Asian conditions. She pointed out their strong batting unit, led by Chamari Athapaththu, and a spin attack that has consistently troubled teams in the region.
“They are a very balanced side. Chamari is a key player, but the batters around her also play a big role. Their spin attack is quite good and has dominated in Asian conditions. We know their strengths and weaknesses, and our focus is on how we can give our best against them,” she said.
Reflecting on the World Cup triumph, Harmanpreet said the title has brought a sense of calm and satisfaction within the group. According to her, the tag of world champions has changed the team’s mindset going into new challenges.
“Earlier, there was always that feeling of when this team would win the World Cup. This time, that question is no longer there,” she said. “We are more peaceful, more grateful and able to enjoy the game fully. There is a lot of pride, but also humility. That makes a big difference.”
