A big change is being seen during the SIR process in Uttar Pradesh. The names of 2.89 crore people across the state have been cut in SIR, out of which the highest number is from Lucknow and Ghaziabad. In Lucknow alone, 30% of the names have been removed, due to which political and administrative turmoil has intensified in the district.
The government has made it clear that now no extension of time will be given in the SIR process. The final draft will be released only on 31st December. The first deadline to complete the SIR process was December 4, but it was extended twice and finally expired on Friday.
In the last 14 days, only 2 lakh new names have been added to SIR, while the number of names removed is many times more than that. Due to this, the eyes of the opposition parties are also fixed on this draft.
The focus is that after deletion of names on such a large scale, how much change is recorded in the voter count of the state when the final list comes.
Let us tell you that till 14 days ago, the Election Commission had told NDTV that 2.91 crore names were going to be deleted because so many people had not submitted their forms. Only 2 lakh new forms were returned during the same period, after which the final number came down to 2.89 crore.
The main reason for a large number of names being cut is believed to be that people who came from rural areas to the metros for employment had got voter ID made at two places.
This time, duplicate entries have been removed after intensive scrutiny, and since people opted to maintain voter identification at their permanent rural address, a large number of names were deleted in Lucknow and other cities.
Earlier, the Election Commission had said that 99% of the work has been completed. By October 27, 2025, 80% of the total 15,44,33,092 voters had filled and submitted their enumeration forms. The remaining 2.91 crore voters were classified into several categories-
To increase the accuracy of voter verification, the Commission has started a special mapping process, in which the name of each voter is being linked to mother, father, grandparents. This work has been completed up to 75%.
