The Indian players are not feeling secure as Gambhir has failed to define the roles.
Gautam Gambhir’s record as India’s head coach in Test cricket has been below-par, with 10 defeats against SENA counties. New Zealand and South Africa defeated India in the away red-ball series. Gambhir is under pressure as former players and fans are questioning his credentials. According to a report, one of the officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently spoke to VVS Laxman about coaching the Test team.
However, the legendary batter is happy being the head of the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Gambhir has a contract until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup, but there is a possibility that it could be changed depending upon India’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The decision-makers are not pleased with the track record of Gambhir in the longest format and with nine Tests remaining in the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship, Gambhir will have to make sure that the sub-continent team makes it to the final to save his job.
India will play Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the two away series, while Australia will compete in five Test matches in India.
“Gambhir has lost the support and if India manage to win the 2026 T20 World Cup or reach the final, he will continue. However, it would be interesting to see if Gambhir is allowed to coach in Test cricket,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “However, there are not many options available and even Laxman is not interested,” the source added.
The Indian players are not feeling secure as Gambhir has failed to define the roles.
Rahul Dravid, who was India’s coach before Gambhir, gave more chances to the players. Shubman Gill, who was being considered as the next poster boy of India cricket, was recently dropped from the T20I team. Gambhir was behind the tough call. After the T20 World Cup, the leading starts will represent their franchises in the 2026 Indian Premier League. The BCCI has enough time to take a call on different coaches in different formats.
