Former Australia batsman Damien Martyn has shown encouraging signs in hospital, according to an update shared by Adam Gilchrist on Thursday, January 1. Martyn, one of Gilchrist’s closest friends and former teammates, has been battling meningitis and is currently receiving treatment at the Gold Coast University Hospital.
The 54-year-old was admitted on Boxing Day, December 26, after his condition deteriorated, and remains in a medically induced coma. Speaking on FOX Cricket, Gilchrist revealed that doctors have observed positive developments over the past 24 hours. “He is still in hospital, and more details will come as tests continue, but certainly in the last 24 hours there have been some positive signs,” Gilchrist said.
The former wicketkeeper also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support Martyn has received from around the world. “There has been so much interest and love. A fine player, a terrific fella. I just hope he can continue on this positive road to recovery,” he added.
Since news of Martyn’s illness broke, messages of support have poured in from across the cricketing fraternity. Former India batsmen VVS Laxman and Ravichandran Ashwin were among those to send their prayers. “Sending strength and prayers to my dear friend @damienmartyn and his family. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery,” Laxman wrote on social media.
Former Australia teammate Darren Lehmann and veteran broadcaster Jim Wilson also shared heartfelt messages, while ex-Test bowler Rodney Hogg described the situation as “shocking” during an appearance on 6PR radio. “We wish him all the best,” Hogg said.
Martyn, widely regarded as one of Australia’s most elegant stroke-makers, represented the country in 67 Tests between 1992 and 2006. He scored 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37, including 13 centuries. After a six-year absence, he was recalled in 2000 and went on to play a key role in Steve Waugh’s dominant side, before retiring midway through the 2006 Ashes series.
