India vs New Zealand ODI: Just before the start of the India-New Zealand ODI series, the Indian cricket team has suffered a big setback. Wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the entire series due to a rib injury during practice. In his place, young player Dhruv Jurel has been included in the team.

Rishabh Pant was batting in the nets during the practice session on Saturday. Meanwhile, a fast ball from the throwdown specialist hit his ribs. Pant felt pain as soon as the ball hit him and he stopped the practice. Initially the injury was considered minor, but later on medical examination the condition was found to be serious.

BCCI issued statement

BCCI issued an official statement in this matter saying that Rishabh Pant suddenly felt pain in the lower right abdomen during practice. After this he was immediately taken for MRI scan. After the medical report and experts’ opinion, it became clear that Pant had a side strain. For this reason, he has been dropped from the entire ODI series as a precautionary measure.

Dhruv Jurel got a chance

After the exclusion of Rishabh Pant, the selection committee took a quick decision and included young wicketkeeper batsman Dhruv Jurel in the team. Jurel has been in excellent form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and his batting has been in the news continuously. He joined Team India on Saturday night itself.

Dhruv Jurel has shown a brilliant performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. He has scored 2 centuries and 4 half-centuries in 7 matches. By scoring 558 runs in 7 innings, he finished third in the list of batsmen who scored the most runs in the tournament. His average in List A cricket is 74.7, which shows his consistency. Although Dhruv Jurel has not yet made his ODI debut for India, Jurel has played 9 Test matches and 4 T20 International matches.

In the absence of Rishabh Pant, the hopes of the team management are now linked to Dhruv Jurel.
