India’s badminton star and London Olympics 2012 bronze medalist Saina Nehwal has announced her retirement. 35-year-old Saina Nehwal gave information about this in a podcast, in which she told that her body is no longer supporting her as per the demands of elite sport. For the last few years, Saina was facing serious knee problems, due to which she had to stay away from competitive badminton. He stated on his retirement decision that his injury had left him unable to perform high-intensity training.
Saina Nehwal said that she had stopped playing badminton two years ago, but had not announced her retirement till now. She felt that she had started playing on her own terms and would now leave on her own terms, so there was no need to announce it publicly. Saina also told that her cartilage was completely damaged and now problems like arthritis were troubling her. This was the reason why he had to take this decision.
Saina Nehwal is the owner of many important achievements in badminton. She was the first Indian badminton player to win a bronze medal at the Olympics. Furthermore, she was also ranked No. 1 in the world in 2015. She won the BWF World Junior Championship in 2008 and also won the Indonesia Open Super Series title in 2009. Saina also won two gold medals at the 2010 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and became the first Indian badminton player to win two singles gold medals.
The Government of India has honored him with many prestigious awards such as Arjuna Award, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contributions.
