Defending champions Mumbai Indians Women find themselves in an uncomfortable position midway through the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026. After five matches, MI have managed just two wins against three defeats, placing their playoff qualification hopes balanced with three league games still to play. Despite occupying second place on the points table with four points, their inconsistent performances have ensured there is little margin for error heading into the business end of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians Women's campaign in WPL 2026Mumbai’s campaign began with a narrow three-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women. They bounced back brilliantly in their next two fixtures, defeating Delhi Capitals Women by 50 runs before chasing down a tough target against Gujarat Giants Women with seven wickets in hand. However, MI suffered back-to-back losses against UP Warriorz Women, first by seven wickets and then by 22 runs in the reverse fixture. In both games, Mumbai were exposed in powerplay and the middle overs.
Mumbai Indians Women's position in points tableAfter five matches, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team sits second on the table with four points and a positive net run rate (NRR) of 0.151. While the current position places them in safety. However, Mumbai is the only team in the top half with a losing record, and a single loss could see them slip down in the standings. Their low powerplay run rate of 6.50, the worst among all teams this season, has consistently put pressure on the middle order.
MI Women Playoffs 2026: Qualification Scenario ExplainedMumbai Indians Women have three league matches remaining, against Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Gujarat Giants. The following are the qualification scenarios for the team
Three wins out of three: Winning all remaining matches will guarantee MI a playoff berth regardless of other results.
Two wins: This scenario gives MI a strong chance, but Net Run Rate will become crucial, and Mumbai may need favorable results from other teams.
One win or fewer: With just one win, qualification would depend heavily on multiple results going their way, making elimination highly likely.
Notably, their final league game is against Gujarat Giants. If MI fails to pick up points earlier, they may already be mathematically eliminated before that fixture. MI next face the Delhi Capitals in Vadodara. Matches against RCB and GG follow, both of whom remain strong contenders for playoff spots.
