In modern-day T20 cricket, a target of 155 is fancied by the chasing team on most days.
In a game that rested on fine margins, it wasn’t quite straightforward for Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League on Tuesday, but Jemimah Rodrigues and Co. eventually sailed home with seven wickets in hand and an over to spare at the Kotambi Stadium. Capitals had solid contributions from Jemimah (51 n.o., 37b, 5×4, 1×6) and Lizelle Lee (46, 28b, 7×4, 1×6), overshadowing Nat Sciver-Brunt’s half-century for MI.
In sharp contrast to MI’s slow start, DC raced off the blocks as Lee and Shafali Verma stitched together a 63-run opening stand in 7.3 overs. They seldom spared the loose deliveries, and seemed keen on finishing proceedings in a hurry. But MI regained a semblance of control when 20-year-old left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma, who was drafted into the squad on Tuesday as a replacement for the injured G. Kamalini for the remainder of the campaign, bowled Shafali and punched the air in delight.

Two quiet overs later, Lee was stumped by Rahila Firdous off Amanjot Kaur rather contentiously. Having overbalanced while attempting to flick a ball down leg, Lee appeared to have grounded her bat in time, but third umpire Ajitesh Argal thought otherwise after several replays. Lee’s frustration was compounded by Argal taking eight minutes to make the decision.
While Jemimah and Laura Wolvaardt built a steady partnership to take DC closer, another potential twist came in the 17th over when the latter was run out at the non-striker’s end by Sciver-Brunt. It was important for Jemimah to hold her composure at that juncture, and she did just that.

Earlier in the evening, Sciver-Brunt (65 n.o., 45b, 6×4, 2×6) and Harmanpreet Kaur (41, 33b, 7×4) contributed heavily to MI’s total of 154 for five. Having joined hands when MI was 21 for two, the duo added 78 runs in 58 deliveries.
