India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8. The Men in Blue became the first team to retain the title. They also became the first team to win the coveted title thrice.
Opting to bowl first, New Zealand would have hoped for early wickets. However, that wasn't to be. Instead, Abhishek Sharma stepped up on the biggest stage and scored a whirlwind half-century. Sanju Samson also played a sensational knock under pressure.
The opening partnership yielded 98 runs in 7 overs. After Abhishek was dismissed for 52 off 21 balls.
Samson and Ishan Kishan took the attack to the Kiwis. They slammed 105 runs in just 48 deliveries. Smason smashed 89 off 46 balls, while Kishan made a 25-ball 54. Shivam Dube also chipped in with a crucial 26 not out off eight balls. In reply, Tim Seifert gave a fine account of his power-hitting, slamming 52 off just 26 balls. However, the rest of the batters in the top order failed to deliver. Mitchell Santner contributed with a 35-ball 43. However, India had way too many runs in the bank.
Jasprit Bumrah brought his A-game to the fore once again.
He bagged a four-for, giving away just 15 runs in his four overs. The right-arm seamer registered his best figures in T20I cricket. The Men in Blue dismissed the Kiwis for 159 in 19 overs to clinch the title. T20 World Cup 2026 Prize Money
