The Mumbai Indians (MI) captaincy saga has taken a dramatic turn ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Former India captain and legendary selector Kris Srikkanth has publicly called for a leadership change, urging Hardik Pandya to step aside in favour of India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain, Suryakumar Yadav (SKY).

With the IPL 2026 schedule set to kick off on March 28, the five-time champions find themselves at a crossroads. Despite a star-studded core featuring Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya, the team’s performance has been under intense scrutiny since the controversial transition from Rohit to Hardik in 2024.

Speaking on his YouTube show, Cheeky Cheeka, Srikkanth highlighted the "funny situation" where Hardik Pandya, the current MI skipper, has recently played under both Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in successful ICC campaigns.

"It's funny because the same Hardik played under Rohit and won the T20 World Cup for India.
He did the same under Suryakumar this year. Hardik Pandya should go on to say, 'I am stepping aside. Let Surya himself lead. He has been the T20 World Cup-winning captain.
So, if Hardik himself says this, things will be resolved. I think it's Hardik who has to go and say this," Srikkanth stated.

Srikkanth believes that if Hardik voluntarily relinquishes the role, it would resolve the perceived "power struggle" and win back the fans who have been vocal in their support for Rohit Sharma.
The decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya in 2024 led to unprecedented backlash at the Wankhede Stadium. While Hardik is a proven IPL winner with the Gujarat Titans, MI's results have been mixed:

IPL 2024: A disappointing 10th-place finish.
IPL 2025: A bounce-back to the playoffs, but an exit in the Eliminator.
The SKY Factor: Suryakumar Yadav is currently at the peak of his powers, having led India to a historic T20 World Cup 2026 title.
