Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming supported his team’s opening batsman Sanju Samson, who was under initial pressure after joining CSK this season.
There were a lot of expectations on Samson, who came to CSK from Rajasthan Royals before this IPL season, because CSK had finished at the bottom of the points table in the last season.
Samson was in excellent form after being named Player of the Tournament in India’s 2026 T20 World Cup win. But so far only 6 and 7 runs have been scored for CSK in their first two matches.
Stephen Fleming said after the match,
“He doesn’t score runs in every match. This is T20 cricket and today he got an opportunity. But he is in good form, training well and when he is in form, he is a match-winner. Two innings is no cause for concern.”
Samson scored only 6 runs off 7 balls in the IPL 2026 opener against his old team Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. After this, only 7 runs were scored on 7 balls against Punjab Kings in Chepauk debut.
According to CricViz, Samson’s IPL career performances in Chepauk have been average. In 6 innings he has scored only 66 runs, with a strike rate of 100. Chepauk is also their lowest average IPL ground (minimum 5 innings).
CSK still have 6 more matches to play this season, and the team is hoping that Samson will bring his form back. After finishing at the bottom of the points table last season, CSK has lost both its opening matches this year too and will now face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday.
