Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajaykanya Rahane’s decision to bat first after winning the toss surprised former cricketers. In the match played against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens, KKR suffered initial setbacks and the team got stuck on the score of 25/2.
Former Indian leg spinner Anil Kumble and wicketkeeper batsman Saba Karim strongly criticized Rahane’s decision.
“I am surprised that Rahane won the toss and decided to bat first. On a pitch where there is a possibility of rain, you should bowl first,” Kumble said on GeoHotstar. At the same time, former selector Saba Karim also found this decision difficult to understand and said, “I am not able to understand this decision.”Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also criticized Rahane’s decision. He said that when the bowling attack is inexperienced and the match is going to be affected by rain, it is not wise to bat first.
Ashwin wrote on Twitter (x), “When you know it will be a rain-affected game and your bowling attack is weak, then why do you choose to bat first. It is a matter of thought.”The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings was canceled due to rain. The cut-off time for the five-over match was 23:14. The rain stopped at 22:30, but there was not enough time to prepare the field. Water accumulated outside the cover and drops of water on the field were clearly visible.
Now KKR has one point from three matches, while Punjab Kings top the table with five points from three matches.
KKR will next play against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at home on April 9, while Punjab Kings will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 11 in Mullanpur.
