Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders could receive a timely boost in their IPL 2026 campaign as uncertainty around Wanindu Hasaranga’s availability begins to ease, amid fresh updates from Sri Lanka Cricket regarding mandatory fitness clearances.
The development comes at a crucial time for KKR, who are looking to revive their season after a mixed start. Reports suggest that Hasaranga’s participation—linked to a contract worth around ₹18 crore—could significantly strengthen the squad if he is cleared to play.
Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed that Hasaranga and fellow pacer Matheesha Pathirana are among several centrally contracted players yet to complete mandatory fitness tests.
Out of 45 contracted players, only 24 have passed the required physical performance benchmarks so far, while others are either recovering from injuries or facing logistical delays.
The board has made it clear that players will only receive a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in IPL 2026 after successfully passing these tests.
This condition has put the availability of several Sri Lankan players, including those signed by IPL franchises, under scrutiny.
Hasaranga is currently dealing with a left hamstring injurywhich has delayed his fitness assessment.
Notably, he has not yet applied for the NOC, adding further uncertainty over his immediate participation. On the other hand, Pathirana—associated with Lucknow Super Giants—is recovering from a calf strain sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026. Encouragingly, he has resumed bowling in the nets and is expected to travel to India by mid-April.
His fitness test is likely to be conducted within the coming week, which could determine his clearance for the remainder of the tournament.
Sri Lanka Cricket has adopted a stringent approach this season, linking IPL participation directly to fitness standards.
The board is currently running an eight-week specialised training programme aimed at improving players’ physical conditioning ahead of upcoming international assignments.
According to SLC:
This move reflects a broader effort to ensure that national players meet high-performance benchmarks before engaging in overseas leagues.
For KKR, Hasaranga’s potential inclusion could be a game-changer. Known for his wicket-taking ability and all-round contributions, he adds depth to both the bowling and batting departments.
If cleared, his arrival could:
Given the reported ₹18 crore investment, the franchise will be keenly awaiting his fitness clearance.
While uncertainty remains, the latest developments suggest that KKR could soon receive a significant boost if Wanindu Hasaranga clears Sri Lanka Cricket’s fitness requirements. However, with strict NOC conditions in place, player availability will continue to hinge on fitness benchmarks.
As IPL 2026 progresses, timely returns of key overseas players like Hasaranga and Pathirana could play a decisive role in shaping team fortunes.
